Sony Xperia™ Tablet S, A Great Travel Companion

When it comes to choosing what tech to take on the road, most travelers these days switch from laptops to something lighter, like smartphones or tablets. While smartphones are great, they give a limited experience due to the small screen. Tablets on the other hand seem to have just the right size, not too small, nor too big. This is the reason why I looked into the option of taking a tablet with me on my travels. While on the train or on the plane, I would like to read, watch some movies or play some games. Therefore a tablet with a good integrated ecosystem of great games, movies and eBooks market would be my first choice. But then I would also like a tablet that I could integrate with my other devices, like the TV and the PlayStation when I'm at home, and Xperi Tablet sounds like a good bet.

Sony Xperia™ Tablet S comes with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB, and with Wi-FI only or Wi-Fi and 3G. It has 1Gb of RAM and it runs Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra®3 on board that is great for all those great games for tablets. The design is beautiful and they used some great materials for good looks and comfortable handling. It only weights 570g, which makes it a perfect travel companion, especially for people who like me, like to pack light even for long trips.

But what is really of interest for me, as a traveler, is the battery life - up to 12 hours. This clearly beats my old laptop that has only 5 hours of battery life. It will be great on a long flight to Asia or a long train ride through Europe. More and more trains have free Wi-Fi so I see myself using the internet on the tablet quite often while on the train abroad, maybe updating my status on the social networks, my blog, or checking my emails... even playing online.

At 9.4 inches, the screen is not too big, not too small. It's just the right size for excellent portability while traveling. I like the colors, the good viewing angles and the auto-brightness option is great in a changing environment like a moving train, as it will dim or brighten the screen automatically based on how bright the surroundings are. It's great not to have to bother with adjusting the brightness for every long tunnel that the train passes through.

Another great feature is the HDMI adapter. When in a hotel, I could connect the tablet to the TV in my room and watch my favorite movies through the tablet.

Personally I am not that fond of cameras on a tablet. They are usually bad. Still, the Sony Xperia™ Tablet S has a 1 megapixel camera in front that does the job for video-chatting with your family back home, and an impressing 8 megapixel camera in the back that takes quite good photos. Still, I don't see myself running through an ancient temple, taking pictures with my tablet. But for travelers like me, who will not give up on the DSLR, Sony has introduced another great feature - an SD slot. Yes, that's right. It's not a mini-SD slot. It's a normal SD slot. At the end of the day, after shooting lots of pictures, I can just pop my SD into the tablet from my camera and upload all my pictures into the cloud.

For a traveler, this tablet certainly ticks a lot of boxes, covering the most important tech needs while on the go. It's one of the sleekest tablets out there, it has expandable storage via SD for all those books, games and movies that you want to bring along on your travels. All the features at the right price.

What tech do you take with you on the road? What features of the Xperia™ tablet caught your attention?
