The Venetian Nightlife
Venice has a bit of a reputation for being a soppy old romantic soul of a city, with its crooning gondoliers and picturesque canals. In fact, the abundance of basilicas and Gothic architecture puts one in mind of a permanent long sleepy afternoon.
But the city is changing. Venice is developing a taste for the night, and is throwing up some clubs and pubs that would give its European party siblings such as Malaga and Ibiza a run for their money when it comes to having a good time. Celebrations are going on late into the night and there's definitely more of a buzz in the atmosphere than there has been.
If you don't believe us, grab your best party pal and book a couple of flights to Venice to experience an altogether different side to the floating metropolis. Here are the top spots to visit on a wild night out.
Centrale
As with many of the city's hottest nightspots, Centrale is hidden away from the tourists in a labyrinth of narrow streets and crooked tunnels. However, if you know where you're going, it's only a two-minute walk from the Piazza San Marco. More known to the locals than the tourists, the venue used to be a well-loved cinema, although you wouldn't know this today if you stepped straight into the futuristic interior. They have a resident DJ and a rather romantic lounge that leans out over a little canal - perfect for a late night canoodle with the boyfriend or girlfriend. The street is the Piscina Frezzeria and you can always tell the bar by the way the lighting changes subtly around the entrance.
Al Volto
You can find this unique and wondrous venue on Calle Cavalli, just a few minutes away from the Rialto Bridge, although again, you may be searching for a long time unless you've got a reliable map. Primarily a wine bar with an ever-changing menu, Al Volto boasts extremely friendly staff who are always happy to offer advice to the newbies and suggestions to the connoisseurs. Around 1,000 beverages are served on a rotation, so you can go back several nights in a week and receive a completely different choice. Be sure to sample the ten types of Venetian bar snack on offer while you're waiting for the rest of your party to make up their minds.
Bacaro Jazz
For those who love their cocktails and jazz, this smooth and swinging venue is the perfect place to visit. All the locals know this haunt, famous - or infamous depending on perspective - for its happy hour between 4pm and 7pm. Watch the experienced staff mix up a potent mix of beverages - the ones to try are the Miles Davis or Sex & Sax, although the Bacaro Dream also slips down the throat extremely easily. If cocktails are a bit sticky for your taste, the bar also has a superb selection of wines and beers - guaranteed to keep everyone happy.
