A Voyage to the Fountain of Youth
One "new cultural trend" of our modern society is going to the spa, looking for the health, wellness, relaxation and why not - the anti-aging miracle. But the reality is that this is not a new trend, not by far. People have been looking for the fountain of youth since ages, going to the spa and visiting remote places with thermal water. The Mesopotamians, the Egyptians, the Minoans, the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans, the Japanese and finally the Western Europeans... all of them cultivated the trend of "spa-going".
The word spa comes from Latin and it is the short version of “salus per aquam” that translates into “health from water.” If you travel to Belgium, you can visit a small ancient village named Spa. It is where hot mineral springs were used by Roman soldiers to treat aching muscles and from light to severe wounds received in one or another battle.
One of my favorite places in UK is Bath. Just a short train ride from London, brings you this wonderful place, with such a fitting name - "Bath". There is archaeological evidence of humans living around the hot springs on which the City of Bath is built at least 8,000 years B.C. Bladud founded the City of Bath around the springs in 863BC. But most fascinating part of Bath's history for me is the period of Roman presence in the region. In AD 70, the Romans built a reservoir around the hot springs, and then a sophisticated series of baths and a temple dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva. I was in owe to visit the ruins and marvel at the extraordinary influence of the romans on this region, so far from Rome.
Of course, nowadays if you visit UK you don't really need to travel to Bath anymore to enjoy a few luxury spa days. You have the choice of so many more locations all over UK, in Birmingham, in York, in Sutton Coldfield, in Cardiff, etc. But if you visit just London or you live in London and don't want to bother with traveling, you can relax right in the heart of the city, among some of the many wonderful relaxation havens, and after a hard day, get a wonderful massage.
The massage and spa going might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it is an ancient-modern trend that it is here to stay, as it already hit mainstream and reached even the furthest corners of the Roman Empire, England...
