Finding Peace and Quiet in Kalkan

In the past decade or so, European tourists in particular have begun to discover that far from being a conservative Muslim country with little to interest the western visitor, Turkey has everything anyone could want in a holiday or travel adventure. However with popularity come crowds and often people can get overawed, even when on cheap Turkey holidays. Istanbul is home to 20 million people – over three times the population of London. Other popular resorts can get crowded in peak times of the year too.

But who said that Turkey isn’t peaceful? Sure there are areas where the young, carefree and families head to and have all that they could ever need on their doorstep. But if you want a bit of peace and tranquilly, the resort of Kalkan takes some beating.

Free from Mass Tourism

Lying along Turkey's gorgeous Lycian Coast, Kalkan has managed to stay free from the negatives that in some cases mass tourism can bring. Here you will be amongst other visitors who like you are not looking for late night clubs, more a soothing place to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Whilst mass tourism has not reared its head in Kalkan, it is not accurate to say that the area sits isolated and away from the beaten path. The main income does come from tourism, but the main difference is the local powers that be are keen to protect the blissful nature of the town.

Daytime Fun

Turkey is a really fun country to be in and Kalkan is no different, despite its reputation as a laid back kind of place. The town sits by a gorgeous bay and the blue flag winning beach is perhaps unsurprisingly where most of the day time action can be found. Water sports such as scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing and banana boat rides are all on offer, as well as the opportunity to go river ‘tubing’ on the Saklikent River.

Relaxing Evenings

What happens at night usually defines a trip abroad. If you come from a country where sitting outside enjoying a beer and a nice meal is not possible except on a few days a year (you live in the UK for example) it is a must that this is possible on your trip abroad. Kalkan offers ample opportunity for you to do just this. In fact, Kalkan is said to have the highest number of restaurants, cafes and bars per square meter on the Turkish coast. Restaurants serve everything from traditional Turkish cuisine to international dishes.

You may not have heard of Kalkan. But this does not mean that it should be avoided or overlooked for the more famous cities and resorts. Tourists and travellers do come here in numbers, but luckily the numbers remain low enough to get a real Turkish experience whilst not feeling totally isolated or off the beaten path.
