Hotel D, Basel. The Best of Both Worlds

Basel, the city on the Rhine, is a curiosity in itself. Located right on the border where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, it has a tri-national metropolitan area, and is one of the most important cultural center in Switzerland. The city hosts many museums and theaters, including the world's oldest art collection accessible to the public and the most fairy-tale like City Hall I've seen in my life.

Basel manages to surprise us from the very first moment we set foot in its train station. We make a stop at the Tourist Office to ask for directions to our hotel and a city map. Immediately we are handed a free Mobility Card that we can use for the whole duration of our stay in Basel. We are certainly surprised, but apparently in Basel they take their tourists very seriously and welcome them with open arms (and free Mobility Cards if you stay at any of the hotels in the city). This makes Basel jump right at the top of our list of most tourist friendly cities in the world!

As we arrive at Hotel D, it's pouring down heavy rain. Our room is almost ready, and while waiting in the modern lobby with floor to ceiling windows, we are served drinks of our choice. The atmosphere is relaxed, and we take advantage of it to have a look around. There is a small business center with two computers and a printer discretely tucked in one of the corners and the breakfast room is basically part of the lobby.

The modern building of Hotel D is located close to the city center, a couple of minutes walk from the river and the bridge, the pretty City Hall and the shopping venues of Basel. The efficient tram system is very close as well.

While here we get the chance to talk to various members of the front desk staff and they all speak multiple languages, a thing not uncommon among Swiss people. Not to mention they are helpful and efficient and nothing seems too much trouble for them.

We stay in one of the spacious executive rooms, with floor to ceiling windows, comfy king size bed, automatic window blinds, iPod docking station and media hub. The room has a peculiar large window facing the trendy bathroom, meant to get your relationship to the next level.

The room is modern and at the same time incredibly comfortable and luxurious. Both my husband and I love the decor and the natural light the room is practically bathed in, as well as the delicious Swiss chocolate waiting for us on the pillow and the cute heart shaped souvenir. Hotel D certainly knows how to get to the guests' heart.

The buffet breakfast is nice and varied, and frankly, I can't make up my mind if the relaxed and quiet ambiance is a coincidence and it happens that all guests are well-behaved, or it is the serene open space that dictates a low tone of voice every morning.

Hotel D is somewhat at the threshold between a romantic boutique hotel and a more business like one. And in a way it graciously combines the best of both worlds. The sauna and fitness center are pretty awesome and an ideal place to start and end a rainy day. The minimalistic design doesn't distract us from relaxing on the hotel premises and the great location makes it easy to explore the city. All in all, a great find!
