In Orebro, the axis mundi is the castle. Situated right in the center of the city, this majestic construction nearly a millennia old, dominates the history, and more recently, the tourist's dynamics. Most visitors come to Orebro to see its fortress. Some do it for its astonishing gardens too. We did it for both.
Location
As we arrived at Orebro Central Station, first thing we looked for was the castle. We were anxious to finally see it. We also knew that as long as we find the castle, our hotel was just a few meters away. After a couple of minutes walking we found them both. Hotel Gota is ideally situated just between the Orebro Castle and the railway station. And given that the city it's not all that big either, our hotel was in walking distance from the beautiful gardens and the old town that now looks more like a museum with pretty wooden houses. We were totally happy with the location of our hotel. We just couldn't have chosen better.
The Service
Gota Hotel is situated in an old building. The reception is at one of the last floors and to get there we had to take a vintage elevator. I must admit I'm usually afraid of getting stuck in tight spaces, but to my delight, the old piece of technology performed admirably.
Hotel Gota is now under new management and the nice lady-owner even came to meet and greet us in person. Not being a big hotel, the service was very personal during the whole duration of our stay. We always like hearing the personal stories behind the places we stay in, and therefore we were quite happy when we got invited to join the other guest for a slice of homemade rhubarb pie and meet the owners.
Our Room
Our room was situated at the last floor and from the balcony we had some impressive views of the castle itself.
The room was huge, organized more in the style of a suite than a normal hotel room, with a sleeping area and a living area. The white walls with minimalist decor were reflecting all the natural light that came in through two floor to ceiling windows. And though the room was nothing fancy in itself, is was comfortable and very much functional. We also had free Wi-fi. And everything was spotless. It also helps that the hotel looks like it has been renovated to a certain extent when the management changed. The pine polished floors all over the hotel were very nice and it gave a touch of luxury.
There is no reception during the nighttime, but we were given a code with which we could enter the hotel's premises.
The Breakfast
But our favorite area was the breakfast room, the same one where they serve the homemade pies every afternoon at tea time for all the guest of the hotel. This room was so gorgeously decorated with old furniture and objects that it gave me an warm, fuzzy feeling.
As the hotel has only a few rooms, the breakfast was not big either. But it had freshly backed homemade bread and some good quality products. All in all it had a beautiful layout and it reminded me of my granny's. We were between the first guests to come down to breakfast, but just as we were about to finish, the room filled up. It turns out Hotel Gota is not that small after all!
We were guests of Hotel Gota, however all opinions expressed here are our own.
It was in Strasbourg in the middle of the 15th century that Gutenberg perfected and unveiled the printing press. Today, the city celebrates him with a bronze statue in a square named after him and a pretty hotel bearing his name. Location Hotel...
