Scandic Hotel, Bergen. Pretty Surroundings and Good Breakfast

Bergen is not a large city and this has it's advantages - most hotels are located smack down in the city center. And Scandic Hotel is no exception. It took us only a few minutes from the train station to get to the hotel. And from the hotel it was always pleasant to walk to the main attraction, like the UNESCO Heritage site of Briggen, the fish market and the starting point of the fjord cruises.

Plus, one day, we discovered that just behind the hotel there are some pretty cobbled streets decorated with cute wooden houses that made for a perfect walk before sunset.

Our Room

We were given a room at the first floor, and while we didn't have much of a view, the distance between the buildings was enough to let the natural light come in through the curtains.

The room was pretty large, and though basic, it had an iron and iron board and a great selection of teas and a kettle which came in very handy, as the summer weather in Norway is not precisely the warmest.

The common areas

The reception area is huge to say the least. And if the decor wasn't exactly it's strongest point, it was very well maintained, like the rest of the hotel. In one corner there was a chimney, which was nice to sit in front and warm up.

The Breakfast

Now the breakfast was probably the star at Scandic Bergen. It was beautifully presented and it had lots of variety. One other good thing was that it was never crowded. It is true that the breakfast room was large, but even so, we never felt the pressure like in other hotels. And that given the fact that the breakfast is always included in the room rate, so it's not like the guests decided to skip it or something.

I loved the range of organic food and the the novelty they introduced, like mayonnaise based salads that are between my favorite and that I usually don't find between the breakfast options in a hotel. OK, they might not be the healthier, but they are delicious, you must agree. Plus they are only half sinful if you combine them with a few other healthy options, right?

The breakfast room was nicely decorated, and it just felt good being here. Hence we were usually the last to leave breakfast in the morning. We would also arrive late, just minutes before they would start gathering the breakfast spread, which was surprisingly early - at 10AM. So because we were tired from all the sightseeing from the previous days, we would come down at 9:45AM. You would think there would be any more food left by then, right? Wrong! There was always plenty of food on the table. And that was a big, big, plus!
