Spanish Traditions: Marzipan Fruits for Lovers Day
Even before Valentine's Day was made popular in Spain, in Valencia, the Lovers Day was celebrated on the 9th of October. Nowadays, San Dionisio, the patron saint of lovers, is a relatively low-key tradition, shadowed by the Day of the Autonomous Community of Valencia, celebrated on the same day. The two festivities are however intertwined, as the origins of San Dionisio also date back to the 13th century when the Muslim Empire was expulsed from Valencia.
It is customary for men to give their sweethearts a scarf filled with marzipan sweets on this day. Therefore, supermarkets come to the guys rescue and around the 1st of October, small trays with a delicious assortment of fruit shaped marzipan make their way to supermarket shelves.
For the more exigent ones however, some select pastry shops around the city, decorate their windows (and counters) with beautiful, homemade marzipan fruits and vegetables, as well as colorful, hanging scarves. There's even a competition with prizes between the confectioners, resulting in very original and varied creations, not to mention mouth-watering ones.
The following marzipan sweets are from 3 different such pastry shops.
