Top Tips on Turkish Cuisine
Turkey is a unique country and has many reasons for being so popular with tourists. Boasting coastlines that are unrivalled, and which due to their differences in natural makeup offer so many varied summer holiday possibilities, Turkey has long been a dream destination for sun lovers.
Located at the point where Europe meets the culture and traditions of the East, Turkey also has a long history as the crossroads where a unique mix occurs when it comes to people, culture and food. Trading and markets have taken place there throughout the centuries and the result is that today Turkey has a mix of many flavours and characteristics that make it so special.
Food
The cultural mix means that the mouth-watering Turkish cuisine stands apart from any other. From the way it is presented to the way it is cooked and right through to the dishes themselves, enjoying food in Turkey is a big part of the overall experience. Of course, with such a wide variety across the country, flights within Turkey can be the perfect way to sample everything that its different regions have to offer.
Serving
Turkish food comes in generously sized portions which means even those with the biggest appetites will be happy. A meal traditionally starts with hot and cold appetisers which are combined to make a mix for the whole table. Vegetables play an important role in Turkish cooking and you will find lots of tomatoes and peppers included alongside grilled meats with delicious yoghurt sauces.
Specialities
Turkish specialities include many different styles of flat breads, kebab style servings for a range of meats cooked in various ways and of course the famous sticky sweet varieties of Baklava for dessert. Turkish coffee is also well-known around the world because of its unique consistency and strength. Sweets such as Lokum, also known as Turkish Delight, give Baklava a run for its money in the popularity stakes and of course Turkish yoghurt is also widely known and enjoyed.
Kebabs
Probably the best known Turkish food is the humble kebab, but there is far more to the name than many in the UK might realise from their own experience of high street kebab shops. Shish Kebab is made with tender pieces of lamb grilled over charcoal and is incredibly popular in Istanbul. Döner Kebab is a roll of lamb on a vertical skewer that turns parallel to a hot grill. This is familiar to many late-night foodies in Britain but the nature of a Döner is its country of origin will surprise many.
