As soon as we arrived in Rattvik, we entered the Tourist Office next to the train station to ask for directions to our hotel. We were surprised when the first reaction of the lady behind the desk was 'you'll have the best views over the lake from up there!'. Boy she was right!
Location
Best Western Hotel Lerdalshojden is situated in a wonderfully quiet residential area up the hill and there's nothing between it and Lake Siljan to obstruct the views. I guess if you have no car of your own you could take a taxi to and from the hotel, but we preferred to walk our way up and down the hill. The clean air, green surroundings and beautiful houses made for the perfect break from the city scapes we had visited during the first part of our Interrail trip. We were there for the beauty of nature and not even for one split second the thought of taking a cab crossed our minds, in spite of the road being a bit steep at times and the lack of side-roads. But then again, there was almost no traffic on the way to the town center, so it was perfectly safe. All in all this was a very pleasant 15-minute walk to the town center, the beach and all the cultural and natural marvels this charming little place has to offer.
Our Room
We were given a room with lake views, which was a very nice detail, especially because we never asked for a lake view in the first place. The white paint that covered the walls, in combination with all the natural light coming in, made for one of the most serene hotel rooms we've ever stayed in. And since Best Western Lerdalshojden proudly featureed the cultural heritage of the area everywhere we looked, there was a cute Dala horse painting on top of the bed and the key chain was shaped in the form of a Dala horse head too.
Tip: The Dalecarlian horse or Dala horse is a wooden horse statuette, traditionally hand carved and painted, originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna. Back in the good old days it was used as a toy for children, but nowadays makes for a great souvenir.
The room had wooden floors, a large heater for the winter months and a flat TV set. Though neither the room nor the bathroom was anything fancy, they were comfortable, neat and spacious. However, the stunning views were generously making up for the minimalist room decor.
But the punch line is that from Best Western Hotel in Rattvik we witnessed one of the most spectacular sunsets ever. It was an unusually long sunset and the sky changed colors and patterns every few minutes. We happily watched nature's spectacle wrapped in the scent of climbing red roses, while sitting in one of the comfy armchairs on the terrace with a cup of hot tea in hand. Seeing this sunset till all colors vanished from the sky was one of the absolute highlights of our stay in Rattvik. We really had an advantage point of view due to the location of our hotel.

The common areas
The common areas were wonderfully decorated. I particularly liked the cushions decorated with sweet Dala horses and the traditional flower motifs. The combination between traditional and modern comfort was great and I really appreciated all the natural light the huge windows were letting in.
On one side of the lobby there was a free pull table. We haven't been playing for a while, therefore we were kind of rusty, but we had a good time pretending we were still good at it. The pull table was a great detail and an idea I would like to see implemented in more hotels. There was also a tea/coffee buffet right next to the pull table from where we could help ourselves with hot beverages.
At Best Western Hotel from Rattvik we had Swedish cracker bread for the first time. While I can't really say I got addicted to it or anything, it impressed me by its size and odd shape. I guess I'm just not a big cracker fan in general, but I'm really happy I got to have one of these in Sweden. Of course, they are so big they need to be shared, which again, it's fun.
The buffet breakfast was composed of cold cuts, cereals, veggies, fruits and so. But what we both liked best about the breakfast at Lerdalshojden Hotel was that guests could make their own fresh waffles. There was waffle mix and a waffle iron and anyone could have hot waffles at any time of the morning.
The hotel's restaurant has great views over the lake and the town and it's a wonderful place to dine à la carte. The ambiance is nice and quiet and quite romantic.
